Over time the roots of Auricular therapy, specific treatment on
the ear to address health problems in the body, have been lost.
It is not known where it originated, but it is known that the Egyptians eased
certain pains by stimulating points on the ear.
Hippocrates reported cures for impotence by small blood-lettings of the ear.
Over the centuries, documents have been found that report similar methods for
healing illnesses.
Between the early 1600's and early 1800's there are reports of auricular treatment
being used for the reduction of pain related to toothache and sciatica.
Between 1850 and 1857 the treatment became popular in France, but later fell
into disuse.
In 1951, doctors in the Lyonese region of France began to see patients who had
cauterizations on the ear for the treatment of sciatic pain. The patients claimed
that the treatment had been successful.
One of these doctors was Dr. Paul Nogier, a French neurologist. He went on to
discover that specific points on the ear are directly related to certain parts
of the body and could, therefore, be used to assess and treat a person’s
health problems. He confirmed that treating specific points on the ear alleviated
problems in corresponding parts of the body.
The methods he pioneered became known as Auriculotherapy. Over time and with
further investigations Auricular medicine evolved.
